Pilate is a blind zebra and the beloved of Bellesmith.
Though blind, Pilate is capable of sight through the use of a device called the Optical and Spatial Integration System, or O.A.S.I.S. This allows him to read books and conduct mana.
Pilate was one of the first members of the Noble Jury, along with Bellesmith. He serves as a navigator for the ship and conducts research on multiple different artifacts that the crew finds throughout the series.
During Urohringr, Pilate was seperated from the rest of the Jury and, lacking O.A.S.I.S., was unable to find his way back safely. He was later found by Roarke, who provided a different optical device, the Ocular Array, as a replacement for O.A.S.I.S. After the Jurists found Pilate and reunited, Kera, upon seeing Pilate again, finally recovered from the trauma she had experienced from the incident at Lerris and was once again able to function as a member of the Noble Jury.
